A highly trained unit of 15 people appeared, unannounced to all but a few, in the finance and computer science departments at the University on Monday. Armed with nothing more dangerous than stunning flowers and dramatic plants and containers the operation was all over in a little over the hour.

But what exactly was it all about? Nina Quinlan, project manager of the University’s dedicated ‘Well-Being’ team, comments, “We were approached by the Flower Council of Holland in March this year to see if we were interested in taking part in a pilot programme to measure the impact flowers and plants might have. And to be honest we were surprised to hear how much worldwide work had already been done which shows how plants in particular have had a positive and measured effect on people at work.

“It perfectly suited our goals under our well-being initiatives and today is just the start of the activity. Over the weeks ahead we will be tracking reactions, moods, motivations and attitudes to the presence of flowers and plants over the next 12 weeks.”

Leeds University Well-Being team focus on every aspect of the working day and the diversity of the people employed at the University: from students to support staff and from academics to artists it has long been recognised that many aspects of the working environment could benefit from a little lift.
